A royal expert has claimed that whichever direction Prince Charles takes with his relationship to both the Royal Family and Prince Harry, there is “always going to be a problem”. The Prince of Wales has maintained his desire to slim down the monarchy after he ascends the throne, despite his public fallout with the Duke of Sussex.
Royal expert Neil Sean said: “Whichever way, Prince Charles seemingly can’t seem to win.
“Obviously, he has to streamline the monarchy for the 21st century and more importantly, he had no reason to wish to fallout with his youngest son.
“But it seems that whichever way Prince Charles turns is always going to be a problem, particularly when your family is also your business, as Harry and Meghan are now finding out.”
Prince Charles has made it be known since the 1990s that he intends to slim down the British monarchy after he ascends to the throne.
This would include reducing the number of Royal Family members who are dependent on the Sovereign Grant, and minimise the number of working royals who represent the monarch.
Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie no longer receive taxpayer-funded money nor security, and both have established their own professional careers.
The children of Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex will similarly receive no public funding, and will both be expected to get jobs when they become of age.
At present, the Queen depends on a core group of senior royals, nicknamed the ‘Marvellous Seven’, to represent her during formal engagements.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were both considered important figures within the royal circle ahead of their departure in 2020.
The couple announced in January 2020 that they would be withdrawing from their roles as senior working royals, and would strive to become financially independent.
Since then, they have relocated to California and have conducted a number of high-profile interviews where they have openly criticised the Royal Family.
During their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in March, Prince Harry spoke of his relationship with Prince Charles, saying he felt “really let down” by his father’s handling of the situation.

He also revealed that his father had “stopped taking my calls” and that the couple had been financially cut off from the Royal Family.
Other allegations included the family ignoring Meghan’s mental health, Palace aides refusing to intervene with the British tabloids and a senior member of the Royal Family making a racist remark about the couple’s unborn son.
In subsequent interviews with Dax Shephard and Oprah Winfrey, the Duke of Sussex has continued to speak of the rift between himself and the Prince of Wales.
In an episode of the podcast Armchair Expert, he spoke of the “genetic pain and suffering” within the Royal Family, and criticised his father for not protecting his children from the media harrassment they endured as children.
He also stated that he would “never be bullied into silence again”.
