Prince Charles boost: How Prince of Wales revived his reputation

Charles’ turbulent relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles was covered in Series three of Netflix’s ‘The Crown’, released on Sunday. The pair reportedly fell in love in the Seventies, but Charles was called away to serve in the Royal Navy while Camilla went on to marry her on-and-off again boyfriend, Andrew Parker Bowles. The Prince of Wales was left utterly devastated. He went on to marry Diana Spencer, but soon resumed an affair with Camilla. In the meantime Diana’s popularity soared and she won the public’s support as her marriage crumbled and Charles revealed his ongoing romance with his former girlfriend.

The Prince and Princess of Wales then sought a divorce in 1996, after a high-profile and messy split.

Diana’s tragic death from injuries sustained in a car crash a year later meant many grieving fans turned to blame Charles for her unhappiness.

Yet, in March 2019 filmmaker John Bridcut told DailyMailTV how Charles managed to turn public perception around over the years.

Mr Bridcut said: “That difficult period after Diana’s death sort of coloured things for quite a while.

“I think what has changed is the perception that he (Charles) works incredibly hard at causes that a lot of people have come around to.

“People often saw his causes as a bit cranky when he started out and a lot of them have become much more widely accepted.

“Clearly he didn’t create the campaign for climate change, but he was involved early on in pushing that as a really important issue.”

Charles has been a prominent voice in the ongoing climate change campaign for many years.

His son Prince Harry even turned up to show his support for his father when he delivered a speech about saving coral reefs last year at the International Sustainability Unit’s meeting.

In December 2017, the duo also appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme to discuss environmentalism.

While Charles said he had “probably bored [Harry] to tears for so many years” when talking about the planet, he added that he was “very proud” his son was now striving to help.

Harry explained that he “totally” understood Charles’ point of view now especially as he started advocating for a change towards the climate back when it was still considered “dotty”.

Speaking to DailyMailTV earlier this year, Mr Bridcut continued: “And I think other things like corporate social responsibility, urban design, that’s a bit more controversial I suspect, but his involvement particularly with the Prince’s Trust and young people have I think won him a great deal of respect.

“I found it interesting, because this is a film where we were filming in Durham although it’s not made clear where it is the film, an he was up doing a walkabout in the streets and there were a lot of students out in the streets.

“I was really surprised by this, because I thought when we were going up, there will be middle aged and elderly people and perhaps some young families with young children out to see him.

“I was really surprised by the number of university students who were waiting to talk to them.”

The filmmaker added that the Prince of Wales found it “very easy to engage with” the students.

He explained: “I think that’s one of his strengths, which is gradually percolating through that he is such more at ease talking to people he doesn’t know than a lot of royals are.

“He always aims to find a connection with people that he meets.”

He also recalled how several people said “I’ve come to see the next King”, emphasising how the public have started to see Charles as the future sovereign as opposed to the Queen’s son.

Bridcut’s film, ‘Prince Charles at 70’, premiered in March this year, and apparently revealed how Charles had a closer relationship with his sons than previously assumed.

Mr Bridcut said: “There was a sense in which for a long time, people saw themas their mother’s sons and I think there’s been a growing awareness that actually they have a good relationship with their father and it’s actually quite touching and it’s sort of built in the last few years.

“And the thing is Princess Diana inevitably has faded from public consciousness, because it’s now more than 20 years since she was alive, and so there is a hole new generation that didn’t know her at all.”

Many royal supporters were also pleasantly surprised when Charles stepped in at the last minute to walk Meghan Markle down the aisle when she married Harry in May 2018.
