Prince Charles ‘idea’ to get William and Harry together says expert

Prince Charles was reported to have masterminded the first private conversation between his two sons in the aftermath of the wake for Prince Philip. The talk took place hours after Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge first rekindled talks between Prince William and Prince Harry after approaching her brother-in-law following the funeral. The double-pronged attempt to bring the two brothers back together comes in the aftermath of an explosive interview the Duke of Sussex and wife Meghan Markle gave talk show host Oprah Winfrey in March.

Royal commentator Katie Nicholl told ET: “It was Prince Charles’ idea to get the boys together after the wake.

There really wasn’t any time before, Prince Harry was in self-isolation in the days leading up to the funeral for them to get together. But after the funeral, there was an opportunity and it was Charles’ idea for them to take a walk around the grounds of Windsor Castle.

“They were outside, so obviously adhering to Covid regulation, where they couldn’t be eavesdropped upon and it was just the three of them.

“It was quite an important meeting. Harry was very happy to go along with that and it was really the first time that the three of them were able to come together and have a private, informal meeting.”

Ms Nicholl also said the Duchess of Cambridge played a crucial part in the strategy to ensure Prince William and Prince Harry could reconcile.

The commentator suggested Kate worked “behind the scenes” to bridge the gap that formed between the brothers in recent years.

She continued: “It has always been my understanding that behind the scenes Kate has tried very hard to arrange a rapprochement and act as a peacemaker between William and Harry.

“You know she loves Harry, he says she is the sister that he never had.

“She has been heartbroken to see them fall out.

“I think she is one of the very few people, one of the few family members, who was actually able to push the brother together.

“Which she did in a very subtle way but it was very effective.

Before Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018, the Duke often worked alongside brother William and sister-in-law Kate on common projects through their Royal Foundation organisation.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex departed the foundation months before confirming they would step down from royal duties in March 2020.

Following the announcement, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle relocated their family to the United States and have been unable to return to the UK because of current travel restrictions between the US and the UK.

The Duke only managed to return in early April to attend the funeral of his grandfather, Prince Philip but had to remain in quarantine until the morning of the service.

Kate was spotted approaching Prince Harry outside the church and starting a conversation with him, later involving Prince William as well before leaving the brothers to speak by themselves.
