Prince Archie’s birthday party plans as dad Harry attends Coronation
Most people will be celebrating King Charles’ Coronation on Saturday, May 6, but another royal event will take place on the same day.
Prince Archie, the son of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, will be turning four years old, and he will be having a birthday party at home in Montecito, California rather than attending his grandfather’s Coronation.
It has been confirmed by Buckingham Palace that dad Harry will be travelling to the UK to attend the Coronation and that Meghan will remain home in the US with their children.
The King is said to be “very disappointed” he will not be seeing his grandchildren or Meghan at the Coronation, but “understands the situation.”
How will Archie be celebrating his special day? Here is everything we know about the young royal’s birthday.
How will Archie spend his birthday?
Archie is set to have a “low-key party” and will be celebrating his birthday with close friends and family at his home in the US.
A source told People: “It’s going to be a low-key party at home. They’ll have friends around them and Meghan’s mom, Doria [Ragland]. Meghan will definitely have support that weekend.”
Of course, Archie’s little sister, Princess Lilibet will also be there to have fun and support her brother.
The same source said: “They are so sweet together. Archie loves Lili. He’s such a sweet boy. When she’s not around, he asks, ‘Where’s Lili?'”
Who will be invited to Archie’s birthday party?
Aside from his close family, it has currently been unconfirmed who else will be attending Archie’s party.
Victoria Jackson, a famous makeup artist who lives next door to the Sussexes, may get an invite as it has been reported she and her family are close to the royals
In an interview with The Cut, Meghan said that both Archie and Lilibet love visiting Victoria to see the farm animals she owns, and said: “The kids have been over to pet Jackson’s mini-pigs.”
Oprah Winfrey is also neighbours with the Sussexes and is known to be close to the family after she interviewed both Meghan and Harry about why they left Royal Family, and so may also receive a birthday invitation.
Another person who may attend the celebration is tennis star Serena Williams, who is a long-term friend of Meghan’s and her children are known to have playdates with both Archie and Lilibet.
Somebody else who may receive a party invite is chat show host Ellen Degeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi, who are also close friends with the Sussexes.
Ellen has revealed that she flew to the UK to meet Archie shortly after he was born and also visited the royal children on Halloween 2021 when Archie was dressed as a dinosaur and Lillibet was dressed up as a skunk.
Will Prince Harry be at Archie’s birthday party?
Harry is expected to return to the US only two hours after the Coronation so that he can celebrate Archie’s birthday, and will not be staying in the UK for any of the other Coronation celebrations.
A source has told the Mirror that Harry will be “in and out of the UK in 24 hours.”
The Coronation is expected to end at 1pm BST, so it is likely Prince Harry will be travelling back home to the US at 3pm Saturday.
Another source told the Mirror: “After much back and forth, Harry said that he would be returning for the King’s Coronation but it will only be a fleeting visit.
“Organisers have been told Harry won’t be attending the concert with the rest of the Royal Family, which is a great shame as it will be such a spectacular event.”
What presents will Archie get for his birthday?
It is currently unknown the exact presents Archie will relieve on his birthday, but he has received some unusual gifts from family members in the past.
During an interview with the Late Late Show, Harry told James Corden that Queen Elizabeth once gifted Archie a waffle maker because he was desperate for one.
Harry said: “My grandmother asked us what Archie wanted for Christmas, and Meg said a waffle maker. So she sent us a waffle maker for Archie, so for breakfast now Meg makes up a beautiful organic mix, in the waffle maker, flip it, out it comes.”
Archie loved the gift a lot, and Harry said that he now “wakes up in the morning and goes ‘waffle’.”
It has also been reported that Charles and Queen Camilla once gave Archie a pair of brown leather lederhosen, as they were in Germany in 2019 shortly after Archie was born.
President of Bavaria, Markus Soder gifted Charles and Camilla the trousers after meeting the royal couple in Munich, and they also received 36 other gifts for Archie during their trip, which also included four soft pretzel teddy toys.

Archie’s first birthday came only a few months after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and to celebrate both Meghan and Harry shared a video of Archie being read a book as part by Meghan as part of the Save the Children’s reading campaign.
A source told People that Archie had a “family-focused” birthday due to the social distancing guidelines in place at the time.
The source said: “They’ll have a smash cake and Zooms with family and friends. It’s been beautiful weather, so perhaps a family stroll with the dogs.”
For his second birthday, Meghan and Harry shared a photo of Archie holding some birthday balloons and asked royal fans to donate to charities that will help vulnerable people receive a COVID vaccine if they wished to celebrate Archie’s big day.
On their Archwell website, the Sussexes wrote: “We cannot think of a more resonant way to honor our son’s birthday…even a small contribution can have a ripple effect. Together, we can uplift, protect, and care for one another.”
Meghan and Harry did not post an update for Archie’s third birthday, but Queen Elizabeth marked the occasion by wishing him a happy birthday on the Royal Family’s social media pages.
On behalf of Queen Elizabeth, the post said: “Wishing Archie Mountbatten-Windsor a very happy 3rd Birthday!” alongside a portrait of Archie with his great-grandmother and great-grandfather, Prince Phillip.
Archie’s uncle and aunt, Prince William and Princess Kate, also shared a family photo of Archie at his christening to celebrate his birthday, and wrote: “Wishing Archie a very happy 3rd Birthday today.”
