Queen Elizabeth II has four children – Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. Prince Andrew arrived in 1960, ten years after Princess Anne, and the young prince soon won the heart of the nation. However, Her Majesty’s second son Prince Andrew has a rather strange nickname for his mother, according to royal biographer Andrew Morton. 

In his 1983 book “Andrew: The Playboy Prince”, Mr Morton takes a look at the young life of the Duke of York.

Mr Morton writes: “The toddler had a special joint name for Nanny Anderson and his mother – ‘Mamba’.”

Mr Morton does not reveal where the rather unusual nickname came from, but does add that Nanny Mabel Anderson was the young prince’s “constant companion”

He writes: “So closely did she guard her charge that when Prince Philip and the Queen went to Windsor for weekends they left baby Andrew behind rather than disturb the nursery routine.”

However, he adds: ”The Queen looked forward to Mabel’s night off with relish.

“For then she could go to the nursery and bath and read stories to her favourite son.”

Mr Mroton also writes about Prince Philip’s nickname for Prince Andrew.

According to the royal biographer, the Duke of Edinburgh calls his second son “The Boss”.

Andrew’s birth in 1960 was significant because he was the first child to be born to a reigning monarch since the birth of Queen Victoria’s youngest child Princess Beatrice in 1857.

His arrival also heralded the change of the Royal Family’s surname from Windsor to Mountbatten-Windsor.

However, “Mamba” is not the only nickname Her Majesty has within the Royal Family.

Perhaps her most famous is “Lilibet”, which came about from the way the infant princess pronounced her own name.

Princess Margaret often called her sister the endearing name. 

However, only Prince Philip uses the moniker he gave his wife of 71 years: “Cabbage”.

Another sweet and rather humorous nickname the Royal Family use for the Queen is “Gary”, which came form the way the young Prince William pronounced “Granny”.

Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee who Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry, famously had very catty nicknames for the Royal Family.

She reportedly called the young Princess Elizabeth “Shirley Temple”, and the Queen Mother “Mrs Temple”.
