Ms Giuffre claimed she had tried every way to avoid taking the case to court.

The Duke has denied these claims despite being accused of doing so by Ms Giuffre.

During an interview with the BBC’s Emily Maitlis, the Duke said he had no recollection of meeting Ms Giuffre.

Her lawyer told the BBC: “He cannot hide behind wealth and palace walls.”

Asked if the Duke could ignore the case and not participate in proceedings, Mr Boies said it would be ill-advised to do so.

He added: “If he doesn’t, it’s going to be a default judgement against him that can be enforced not in the US but in virtually every civilised country in the world.

“So you ignore the law and you ignore the court at your peril.

“You can ignore me, you can ignore Virginia, but you can’t ignore the court, and if he thumbs his nose at the courts in the way he’s thumb his nose at the victims of Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking, I think he will find that it is not a desirable outcome.”

On August 10, Ms Giuffre filed a civil suit against the Duke alleging he had sexually abused her at Jeffrey Epstein’s homes in Manhattan, Little St James in the US Virgin Islands and at a residence in London.

Documents of her civil case read: “In this country no person, whether president or prince, is above the law, and no person, no matter how powerless or vulnerable, can be deprived of the law’s protection.

“Twenty years ago Prince Andrew’s wealth, power, position, and connections enabled him to abuse a frightened, vulnerable child with no one there to protect her.

“It is long past the time for him to be held to account.”

Prince Andrew has previously denied these claims but is yet to respond to the lawsuit filed this week.

During an interview with the BBC in 2019, Andrew said: “I have no recollection of ever meeting this lady, none whatsoever.”

In a later statement, he said he regretted his association with Epstein.

He said: “I continue to unequivocally regret my ill-judged association with Jeffrey Epstein.

“His suicide has left many unanswered questions, particularly for his victims, and I deeply sympathise with everyone who has been affected and wants some form of closure.

“I can only hope that, in time, they will be able to rebuild their lives.

“Of course, I am willing to help any appropriate law enforcement agency with their investigations, if required.”
