Ahead of a telephone conference with Virginia Giuffre’s legal team, the Duke’s representatives will argue papers were not served through a British court official. Andrew B. Brettler will represent Andrew this evening during the telephone conference. The lawyer is based in Los Angeles and is a senior partner at Lavely & Singer.

He specialises in media and entertainment litigation and employment law.

Mr Brettler was revealed as the Duke’s representative in notice of appearance papers today.

The document states: “Mr Brettler, who is a member in good standing of the bar of this Court, hereby enters this special appearance on behalf of Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, in the above-captioned proceeding, for the purpose of contesting purported services of process and challenging jurisdiction.”

While Mr Brettler will argue the jurisdiction of the document, Ms Giuffre’s team insist the Duke was sent legal papers on August 27.

They claim the documents were emailed to a member of the Royal Household staff.

They also state the Duke’s lawyers were informed via email and post.

The document stated a response from the Duke must be put forward by September 17.

A US judge will decide this evening if the papers were served correctly before the case can proceed.

Ms Giuffre, nee Virginia Roberts, 38, claimed the Duke, 61, sexually assaulted her when she was 17.

Andrew has strenuously denied her claim and any wrongdoing.

Asked of the allegations during a Newsnight interview in 2019, the Duke claimed he had not met Ms Giuffre.

Andrew said: “I have no recollection of ever meeting this lady, none whatsoever.”

Last month, Ms Giuffre filed a civil case against the Duke.

If the allegations aimed at the Duke are found to be true, Andrew could face paying substantial damages to Ms Giuffre.

Andrew is currently residing at the Queen’s Balmoral estate in Aberdeenshire.

The Duke and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, 61, travelled to the Scottish estate earlier this month to join the Queen.

Since the 2019 Newsnight, the Duke has rarely be seen in public.
