No one wanted Prince Andrew to “flex” his military honours at Prince Philip’s funeral, according to a royal expert. It had been reported that the Duke of York wanted to wear an Admiral uniform to his father’s ceremony despite having stepped back from public life “for the foreseeable future”. ABC News Royal Contributor Omid Scobie spoke to the Royally Obsessed podcast about the reaction to Andrew.

He told listeners: “Pretty much from the get-go everyone who was going was actually under the impression that it would be normal mourning suits rather than military uniform.

“After a few days had gone by there was a story that Prince Andrew had wanted to wear a specific uniform.

“Actually for a rank that he didn’t technically belong to.

“But he’s unofficially retired as a senior working member of the Royal Family.”

Mr Scobie continued: “Although he hasn’t lost his military honours.

“Regardless I don’t think anyone was rushing to want him to flex them on a day like the funeral.

“I think that’s really where the conversation came from.”

The Duke wanted to attend as an Admiral, even though he only holds the rank of honorary Vice-Admiral.

He was supposed to be made an Admiral in the Royal Navy to mark his 60th birthday last year.

However, due to taking a step back in 2019, Andrew had to turn down the promotion.

Mr Scobie added: “Prince Harry was certainly over here knowing that he would wear a mourning suit and his medals.”

He went on: “We saw on the day the four that he had chosen.

“I think everyone tried to be as easy going as possible.

“So this story that ultimately came from the Duke of York’s camp started this entire conversation about uniform.

“Many people wondered if it was Harry that had something to do with putting his foot down, but it just wasn’t the case.

“It was just coming from one person. Whoever dealt with that would have made it pretty clear that everyone does the same thing.”
