Debbie, 61, who was married to Paul for 28 years, said Princess Anne ordered her brothers Andrew and Edward to make sure the magician was on time for a show at the Savoy Hotel in London. The VIP flight was in 1987 after Paul and the royals took part in the televised ‘It’s a Royal Knockout’ event at Alton Towers in Staffordshire. The Princess Royal heard that Paul was due to perform a private show 150 miles away in central London that evening and was determined they should not be the reason he was late.

According to the Daily Mirror, Debbie said Anne summoned Andrew, who was dubbed Air Miles Andy due to his tendency to use private helicopters and planes on official engagements.

Anne asked her brother: “Have you still got the Queen’s helicopter?”

Andrew said “yes” and Anne replied: “Well, go and get it ready, you’re going to fly Mr Daniels to Windsor Castle.

“I’ll phone ahead and get a car read, he’s got to be at the Savoy.”

Debbie said that her husband, who died in 2016 aged 77, entertained Andrew’s then-wife Sarah Ferguson with magic tricks through the whole journey.

Debbie said: “I waved them off on the helicopter pad. Paul, I think, did card tricks all the way to Windsor Castle.

“Then when he got there, she’d not only just organised a car, it was the Queen’s car with the Royal Standard flag – the stretched limo.”

Speaking on her podcast Spill the Tea, Debbie added: “He got into his tuxedo in the back of it going along the M4.

“Then he got to the Savoy, walked on stage and said, ‘Well, you won’t believe where I’ve been’ and of course had a great night at the Savoy.”

Paul was a much loved icon, known for his television series The Paul Daniels Magic Show, which ran on the BBC from 1979 to 1994.

He was recognised for his catchphrase, “You’ll like this… not a lot, but you’ll like it!” and for his marriage to Debbie, who was his assistant.

Paul has been described as “The Godfather of Magic” and is often credited with inspiring many of the top professionals to start out.

Prince Andrew learned to fly a helicopter in the Royal Navy, in which he was a pilot and instructor.

He served in the Falklands War, flying on multiple missions including anti-surface warfare, Exocet missile decoy and casualty evacuation.

He earned the nickname Air Miles Andy after it was revealed he racked up huge travel costs in his role as Britain’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment.

In a biography of the Duke of York, entitled ‘Prince Andrew: The War Hero of Buckingham Palace’, it was claimed that when Andrew travelled to the US in 2008, his private jet trip cost a whopping £100,000.

More recently, Andrew has come under fire for his relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison last year.

However, as a result of the backlash, Andrew has stepped back from official royal duties.

He and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson have hit headlines again in recent weeks, after it emerged they are reportedly being sued for missing a payment on a Swiss ski chalet.
