The Princess travelled to South Africa in Mid-May and became unwell during a conservation mission where she contracted an ear, nose and throat infection, preventing her from travelling.

She underwent a four-hour long surgery on August 13.

Her absence from Monaco has sparked rumours over the relationship and marriage of the royal couple.

Prince Albert told People in this week’s issue he “probably should have addressed” the rumours sooner, stating he is “appalled” people would even think there is a rift between the pair.

“But I was concentrating on taking care of the kids,” he said.

And I thought it would just probably go [away]. You know if you try to answer everything that comes out then you’re constantly [responding], you’re wasting your time.”

The Prince also spoke about his wife’s prolonged stay in South Africa, confirming that the couple are on good terms despite being miles apart.

“She didn’t leave Monaco in a huff!” he said.

“She didn’t leave because she was mad at me or at anybody else.

“She was going down to South Africa to reassess her Foundation’s work down there and to take a little time off with her brother and some friends.

“It was only supposed to be a weeklong, 10-day maximum stay, and [she is still there now] because she had this infection all these medical complications arose.”

The Prince added: “She didn’t go into exile. It was absolutely just a medical problem which had to be treated.”

A foundation set up in her name said in a statement last Friday: “Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco was rushed to hospital by ambulance late on Wednesday night after collapsing due to complications from the severe ear, nose and throat infection she contracted in May.

“Her medical team is currently evaluating her but have confirmed the princess is stable.”

As Princess Charlene’s condition prevented her from traveling, the royal missed the 2021 Monaco Grand Prix and the tenth anniversary of her marriage.

Her husband previously told People, the Princess wants to come home.

He said: “She’s ready to come home. She’s jokingly said that she’s ready to stowaway on a ship to come back to Europe.”
