Prince William has described how his family have been “ahead of their time” in fighting to save the environment.

Speaking ahead of a documentary examining his work to save the natural world the 38-year-old said: “My grandfather, my father, have been in conservation, the environmental work for many years.

“My grandfather was well ahead of his time. My father was ahead of his time.

“I really want to make sure that, in 20 years, George doesn’t turn around and say, are you ahead of your time? Because if he does, we’re too late.”

The royal is taking part in a documentary A Planet for Us All which airs next Monday evening.

It charts the prince’s journey from the Sandringham Estate to Africa and Asia meeting conservation heroes.

Filmed over the course of two years, the film shows his work across the globe helping to save the natural world.

Prince William spoke of his desire to use his platform to help the younger generation be heard in the fight to save the planet.

He said: “I owe it to them to help their voices be heard.

“That generational gap has to be bridged somehow so that the older political leaders understand that the younger generation mean business. They want their futures protected.

“I feel it is my duty and our collective responsibility to leave our planet in a stronger position for our children.”

The Duke of Cambridge also spoke about the impact of coronavirus on the global effort to protect the environment, saying he feels the virus has given the world “a tiny ray of light”.

He said: “I can’t talk about coronavirus without mentioning about how many people sadly lost their lives and how terrible and sad that all is.

“But I think the tiny little ray of light, if, if there’s any ray of light from this, is that it allows us to take stock and to refocus our priorities.

“I’ve been really heartened by what I’ve been hearing from other people and how they’ve started to appreciate nature and experience it.

“And see all the things that they never thought they would. The detail’s come out, because they have had the time.

“We’ve seen from coronavirus, organisations mobilising themselves like never before.

“The research collaboration, the sharing of expertise, money found to support people.

“If we can provide the same motivation with the environment we will have truly turned a corner. Investment, green fashion.

“We need to build back greener. Young people won’t stand for saying it’s not possible.”

Prince William is an impassioned environmentalist who has an impressive track record when it comes to campaigning for the environment.

He was recently pictured meeting Sir David Attenborough for a private screening of David’s new film A Life On Our Planet in the palace’s grounds.

The pair previously discussed the plight of the natural world on stage at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2019.

In 2019 on a trip to the Himalayas he gave a warning about climate change telling Sky News: “If we take too long we will lose many of the precious things we really care about.”

In December 2019 he set up The Earthshot prize.

The prize recognises individuals, groups or organisations who come up with solutions to the world’s most pressing environmental problems.
