Premier Inn destroyed after huge fire causes hotel to collapse

A huge fire has caused a Premier Inn hotel to collapse onto a major road near the M5 in Bristol.

Emergency services were scrambled to Cribbs Causeway at around 1.15pm on Wednesday, before a major incident was declared shortly after 5pm.

Shocking footage shows the moment two sides of the popular hotel suddenly fell onto the A4108 amid the blaze.

The road remains closed while firefighters are still working at the scene.

An Avon Fire and Rescue spokeswoman told Metro.co.uk that an investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the fire.

Firefighters tackled the flames through the night as smoke continued to spread and caused poor visibility on the busy M5.

Emergency services were called after smoke was seen from the roof and the sound of explosions.

South Western Ambulance Service confirmed no one had been injured.

Fire officials are trying to identify everyone who booked a room in the hotel overnight but felt ‘confident’ no one was inside when the fire broke out, reported the BBC.

Local residents have been advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the low smoke plume, or to avoid the area all together if possible.

Resident Laura Evans Hughes said she was shocked she couldn’t get to her own home in Catbrain Hill on Wednesday, as ‘thick and foggy’ smoke filled the area.

‘I literally had to abandon my car, and I had to be police escorted to my house,’ she told the BBC.

‘All last night I’ve been hearing bangs and crashes – I’ve just had to walk to my car now and the roof’s still on fire.’
