Pregnant teacher found in ‘unexplained’ death as manhunt underway
A pregnant teacher was found dead at a house in Glasgow on Tuesday prompting a huge police search. Police Scotland is focusing its search on a country park near the city after Marelle Sturrock’s body was found in the Craigton area at around 8.40am yesterday.
The discovery followed ‘a concern for person’ call. Detectives said her death is being treated as ‘unexplained’ and is linked to an ongoing search of a missing person at Mugdock Country Park.
A large-scale operation was underway near Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire, as dog units and a helicopter were brought in to search the area.
Her family and friends shared a final picture of a heavily pregnant Ms Sturrock.
She is understood to have left her home in the Highlands when she was 17 to study musical theatre in Glasgow and later became a teacher.
In a letter sent to families of pupils who attend Sandwood Primary School, where Ms Sturrock worked, the school said: “It is with deep sorrow that I must inform you about the sudden death of Ms Sturrock who is a beloved member of our teaching staff.
“I know that this will come as a shock to our school community, and we will do all that we can to support children, staff and families through what will be a difficult and challenging time.
“I hope that you will understand that there are no other details that I can share at this time but wanted to let our families know the tragic news from the school.”
Detective Chief Inspector Cheryl Kelly said: “We were made aware of concern for a woman at a property on Jura Street in Glasgow shortly after 8.40am on Tuesday, 25 April. Officers attended and the body of a 35-year-old woman was found within.
“Her death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries remain ongoing.
”Officers have been carrying out extensive searches of Mugdock Country Park in relation to a missing person in the area.
“This is being treated as linked to the death at Jura Street and enquiries remain ongoing.
“Our thoughts are very much with everyone affected by this tragic incident. There is not believed to be any risk to the wider public but anyone with information or concerns can contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident 0904 of 25 April.
“A police presence will remain at both locations as enquiries continue and anyone with information is also urged to speak to any of our officers.”
