Pregnant mum, 26, stabbed to death at home but baby is still fighting for life
A baby is fighting for life in hospital after being delivered when its mother, who was eight-months-pregnant, was stabbed to death.
Kellymary Fauvrelle, 26, has been named locally as the victim whose baby was saved by emergency services called to Raymead Avenue in Thornton Heath, Croydon, at around 3.30am on Saturday.
The Met Police said officers were called to reports of a woman in cardiac arrest and found the mother with stab injuries.
She died at the scene as paramedics turned their efforts to saving her unborn baby, who was delivered at the address and taken to hospital.
The newborn remains in a critical condition, Scotland Yard said.
A senior detective in the case described the stabbing as a ‘horrific incident’ as a murder probe was launched.
Police said a man, 37, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in police custody.
The force said officers ‘retain an open mind to any motive’.
Kellymary’s death is understood to be the 64th murder in the capital this year.
A keen motorcyclist, in February she shared a picture on Facebook of an ultrasound and said: ‘Looks like riding season is on hold for me this year.’
London Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted yesterday: ‘Violence against women has no place in our city, and horrific murders in the home like this show the scale of the problem we face.’
He added: ‘My heart goes out to this innocent child, and to the mother they have so tragically lost.’
Shaun Bailey, the Conservative London mayoral candidate, tweeted: ‘Please God let this child survive.
‘Please let this baby’s family come together to free it from this most heinous arrival to our world.’
Neighbours said that three woman, one of whom was pregnant, lived at the house and they had a small dog.
One neighbour said she had got up at about 3.30am to do her prayers when she heard a dog barking at the house, which is two doors down.
The neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said she was ‘shocked and surprised’ to hear about the attack.
Another neighbour told the Mail on Sunday he heard the sound of police dogs rifling through the property in the early hours of the morning.
He added: ‘It was pretty loud, it woke us up.
‘We heard screaming, and then we saw police and paramedics.
‘Later on I saw another woman come out and just collapse on the street.’
Detective Chief Inspector Mick Norman said: ‘This is a horrific incident in which a young mother has lost her life and her child is critically ill.
‘Our sympathies go out to her devastated family. They are being supported by specially trained officers following this awful event, and I would ask that they are left alone at this time as they come to terms with the enormity of what has happened.
‘A large crime scene is in place, and is likely to be in place for some time.
‘At the forefront of our inquiries is understanding what exactly has led to these tragic circumstances, and we are doing everything we can to establish the facts.’
Medics fought to save the mother after an air ambulance, two ambulance crews and two response cars were sent to the scene by the London Ambulance Service.
The force said a post-mortem examination will be held in due course.
A London Ambulance Service spokesman said they were called at 3.26am on Saturday and sent an incident response officer, two ambulance crews, two medics in response cars and an advanced paramedic to the scene.
They added: ‘We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.
‘We took one person to hospital as a priority.
‘Sadly, despite the extensive efforts of medics, another person died at the scene.’
A police cordon remains in place around the two-storey semi-detached house today, with uniformed officers and forensic investigators seen outside.
On Saturday night, a man in his late 20s was also stabbed to death in London.
Police were called to the junction of Ron Leighton Way and Wakefield Street in Newham, east London, at 11.07pm.
The man, found with stab wounds, was pronounced dead at the scene.
His next of kin have been notified.
A post-mortem examination and formal identification of the victim will take place in due course, Scotland Yard said after launching a murder investigation.
