Boris Johnson has won a resounding 78-seat Conservative majority following the election landslide last night. This huge win for Mr Johnson has “settled the issue of Brexit” for both the EU and the UK, according to political commentator Michael Portillo. The Conservatives won a huge majority in Thursday’s general election, winning 364 seats with just one left to declare while Labour trailed behind with just 203.

However, the triumph could also lead to a surprise U-turn for the Prime Minister in his Brexit promise.

Lord Portillo told LBC’s Nick Ferrari that Boris Johnson could controversially “accept laws made in Brussels” in order to strike a trade deal with the EU.

He said: “There is not going to be a second referendum, there is going to be Brexit.

“But it also settles it for the EU. Any hope they had, like Donald Tusk, that we could change our mind, that is gone now.”

Lord Portillo continued: “People say trade talks take a long time but our economies are in line, and we are just deciding how far we want to move apart, that is a much simpler proposition than normal trade talks.

“I believe the Brexit we will get will leave us pretty close to the EU.

“We won’t have our rules made in Brussels but we may choose to accept some laws made in Brussels for the sake of frictionless trade.

“I think Boris – who is no longer in hoc to a right wing – will accept a Brexit that reflects that 52 percent that voted for it and 48 percent who voted against it.”

He also said that the election was essentially “the third time people had voted for Brexit”.

Later in his interview with Ferrari, Lord Portillo said Boris Johnson had already returned to a “more liberal conservative” like that seen when he was London Mayor.

Lord Portillo said he saw a very different Boris Johnson during his victory speech following his crushing victory.

Speaking to Nick Ferrari, he said: “He’s renamed the party. It’s now the One Nation Conservative Party. It’s the People’s Government. So there are new slogans.

“I think it will be difficult to sustain the idea that he’s an extremist, that he’s a kind of Thatcherite.

“What did he choose to talk about? He spoke about the health service with real passion. He talked about education, infrastructure, carbon neutrality.

“These are not the policies of an extreme right-wing government.”
