Storm Eunice: Folkestone beach battered as Dover port closes

The port has been shut “in the interests of customer and staff safety”. Earlier, several companies including P&O Ferries suspended all sailings between Dover and Calais. A spokesperson said: “We are monitoring the weather situation closely and liaising with the ferry operators with an aim to reopen the port to shipping once it is safe to do so. The safety of our passengers and staff remains our utmost priority.”

Storm Eunice is battering the UK and Ireland with up to 122mph in some parts.

Tens of thousands of people are without power, while planes have had to abort landings.

Dramatic pictures and videos have also shown parts of roof of London’s O2 arena shredded.

Storm Eunice initially hit Western England, making landfall in Cornwall.

More than 100,000 people have been left wihtout power as lines were torn down and trees knocked over by the destructive winds.

Flights at major airports throughout the country have either been cancelled or severely delayed.

Planes were being buffeted so strongly by the brutal winds at some airports that pilots were forced to abandon landings.

British Airways has cancelled a number of flights warned and there would be significant disruption.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Frank Saunders said: “Storm Eunice is really packing a punch.

“We only issue red weather warnings when we think there is a threat to life from the weather.”
