Popular seaside town at war with boy racers keeping residents up at night

One of the common features of the UK’s hundreds of seaside towns is that they are in beautiful locations.

However, it’s not just the towns themselves that are easy on the eye, so too are the roads that connect them.

Some of these roads have become so well known that they have gone down in lore as some of the best in the UK.

While these roads are mainly used by holidaymakers and locals, in recent years they have become more treacherous because of boy racers.

One town in England has become so sick of these drivers that they are trying to ban them altogether.

Eastbourne, near Beachy Head in Sussex, is best known for the white cliffs of Dover and the Seven Sisters walk that passes nearby.

It is also a hot spot for well-behaved motoring enthusiasts who take both current and future classics along the back road.

Not everyone is well-behaved however and after a sustained period of disruption, Eastbourne Borough Council and Sussex Police decided to make changes by implanting a PSPO.

The PSPO is designed to stop antisocial behaviour such as speeding, aggressive driving, racing, and excess noise.

Those caught breaking the PSPO can be given a fixed penalty notice of £100 or a fine of up to £1,000.

Speaking to BournefreeLive, Inspector Sarah Taylor said: “We are delighted that EBC has obtained a PSPO for anti-social driving in the town, as we are aware this is an issue having a large detrimental effect on residents.

“It is one of our key priorities and we fully understand the frustration and disruption it causes to our communities.

“The additional powers the PSPO provides will further enhance the work we already do to tackle inconsiderate drivers.”

According to Hagerty, the PSPO is in place for three years, after which the council can decide whether or not to keep it in place.

They added that the council has “no beef with local car clubs and their events organised through official channels”.

Writing in the publication, journalist James Mills said: “[I]t’s annoying that these antisocial drivers – who supposedly love car culture – are doing their level best to ruin things for all car enthusiasts.

“If you know people who are fuelling the antisocial side of driving, perhaps it’s time to point them toward some succinct advice, popularised by the good folks at car culture destination Caffeine & Machine: Don’t be a d***.”
