Polling guru uncovers Boris Johnson’s ‘Brexit Party nightmare’ after Supreme Court loss

Polling expert John Curtice argued the Supreme Court’s ruling that proroguing Parliament was illegal could spell more trouble for Boris Johnson on delivering Brexit. While speaking on the BBC Mr Curtice said Mr Johnson may be about to experience his “Brexit Party nightmare” as Tory voters look to support the Brexit Party. He added that as Parliament resumes Mr Johnson may struggle to get the legislation through needed to make good on his Brexit promises.

The BBC host said: “With time really squeezed for Boris Johnson to actually get a deal.

“Despite those defeats in the House of Commons and the Supreme Court ruling that thing that might ultimately be his undoing is his own words.

“His claim that the UK would be leaving on the 31st of October come what may because that may not be possible.”

Mr Curtice replied: “If he fails to do that, it is very clear that many voters out there who currently say they vote conservative would go back to Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party.

“That right there is Boris Johnson’s nightmare scenario.

“There is still a question out there yet to be fully answered.

“Which is even if the Prime Minister can get a deal with the EU and get a vote in favour of it in the House of Commons by the 19th of October, and that may have got a bit more difficult in the wake of yesterday’s developments.

“Bottom line is how does he get the legislation that is required through the House of Commons and the House of Lords by the 31st of October.

“Shall we simply say the time table looks very tight indeed by the time it normally takes for legislation to go through the Commons and the Lords.

“And having once already being told that Mr Johnson was not giving the House of Commons adequate time to debate Brexit and is not acceptable.

“He may find that the House of Commons is rather less willing to accept being bullied into a timetable of the Prime Minister’s own making.”
