POLL: Should King Charles pay for Trooping the Colour?
Saturday, June 17, will see the new King Charles celebrate his first official birthday with the nation.
While the King will celebrate his 75th in November, Trooping the Colour marks one of the most exciting points of the annual royal calendar, a chance for the nation to gather to celebrate the monarch (when the sun is more likely to shine).
The event — complete with regiments of the Household Division trooping their colour on Horse Guards Parade, the annual RAF fly-past and the royal family’s iconic balcony appearance — is, however, not without a hefty price tag.
And, because the event is classed as ceremonial — rather than a state affair like the recent coronation — the costs will be covered by Buckingham Palace, using revenue from the Sovereign Grant which is allocated by the Treasury from taxpayer money.
According to estimates, the cost of the King’s first Trooping the Colour could reach as high as £10million.

Costs include those required by the Metropolitan Police to service the event, as well as the Ministry of Defence.
Accommodating hundreds of thousands of spectators, closing off roads and policing them to ensure everything goes ahead safely and smoothly will see the bill rack up quickly.
The King is estimated to be worth £2billion, accrued from inheritance, rural estates, diamond jewels, artworks by Monet and Dali, Rolls-Royces, racehorses, and valuable stamps.
So what do you think? Should the King foot the bill, or is it ok for taxpayer funds to be used? Vote in the poll above and join the debate in the comments below.
