POLL: Do the Royal Family still have a place in British life?
Royal family waves to the crowds after Queen Elizabeth II coronation
King Charles III and Queen Camilla will be crowned in a lavish Coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey this weekend but as the monarchy transitions to a new era, some are questioning its future.
Princess Anne spoke about the future of the Royal Family in an interview with Canadian news network CBC News on Tuesday and said she believes the monarchy has “long-term benefits” which help provide “stability” to Britain.
When asked about the relevance of the monarchy, the Princess Royal said: “It’s not a conversation that I would necessarily have – I think it’s perfectly true that it is a moment where you need to have that discussion.”
She continued: “But I would just underline that the monarchy provides, with the constitution, a degree of long-term stability that is actually quite hard to come by in any other way.”
She also spoke about the responsibility her brother has taken on, explaining: “You know what you’re getting because he’s been practising for a bit, and I don’t think he will change. He is committed to his own level of service. That will remain true.”

A recent YouGov survey has revealed that support for the monarchy has declined. The poll of 2,030 adults in Britain between April 25 and 26 asked whether they believe the monarchy is here to stay.
In total, 45 percent said it is “definitely/probably” here to stay, which is down from 66 percent in 2010.
In comparison, the number of people answering “definitely not/probably not” has increased from 24 percent to 37 percent over the same period.

During the Coronation ceremony, the public will be invited to swear their allegiance to the new King. Chief Executive of the anti-monarchy campaign group Republic, Graham Smith, has criticised the modern addition to the historic ceremony.
He said: “In a democracy, it is the head of state who should be swearing allegiance to the people, not the other way around. This kind of nonsense should have died with Elizabeth I, not outlived Elizabeth II.”
