Police release e-fit in search for missing mum of baby found abandoned in park

Detectives have released an e-fit image of a woman they want to speak to as they continue to search for the mother of a baby abandoned in a park three weeks ago.

Baby George was discovered wrapped in a blanket by a dog walker in Kings Norton park, Birmingham, on the evening of April 22.

George, who was born full-term, is healthy and doing well with foster carers.

The infant was thought to have been only hours old when he was left, prompting police to urge the mother to seek medical assistance.

West Midlands Police said they are still ‘desperately concerned’ about George’s mother and want to check she is both physically and mentally okay.

The force said: ‘This remains our only concern right now, so we’d like to reassure her as well as her family and friends of this.’

Detectives have released a computer generated image of a woman they believe could help their inquiries, which was created after speaking to a key witness.

Police are urging anyone who knows who it is, or the woman herself, to get in touch.

Detective Inspector Neil Hunt, who is leading the investigation, added: ‘Once again, I really want to reach out to George’s mother as you are my concern.

‘I’m worried about you and I need to make sure you are safe and well.

‘We’ve not taken the decision to issue this image lightly or to frighten you. We simply want to find you so we can talk to you, check you are okay, and offer any help or support you may need.

‘If anyone recognises this woman, or thinks they know who George’s mother is, please do get in touch. You can do so in complete confidence if you’d prefer.’

The infant has been named George by the hospital staff looking after him as he was found the day before St. George’s Day.

George was discovered by a husky named Hel who ‘gently nudged him awake’ said his owner Terry Walsh, 64.

He said he would have walked past what he thought was a discarded blanket had it not been for his dog’s quick thinking.

Mr Walsh said: ‘Suddenly I heard this baby cry. I think it was Hel’s gentle nudging and the heat from my Husky’s body that woke the baby up.

‘A bigger dog or another dog with a different temperament might well have just ripped and tugged at the blanket and the baby could have been treated like a ragdoll and then you’ve also got the foxes and the rats and everything in there.

‘How would they treat a baby?’

Officers previously released pictures of the Matalan clothes the infant was wearing when he was found on The Mounds, off Shannon Road in Kings Norton at around 5.40pm.

He had an orange striped T-shirt with a picture of a dinosaur on the front below the words ‘Dino Dude’ and grey bottoms.

The woman has been described as white, around 5ft 6ins tall and of medium to large build.

She was wearing a light grey zipped hoodie and jogging bottoms, and her hair may have been in a low ponytail at the time.

Police are handing out leaflets which include the image in the local area, encouraging anyone who recognises the woman or anyone who knows anything to contact them.

Anyone with information is urged to call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
