A police officer and his colleague feared they would die following a vicious knife attack by a former care worker earlier this year. Knife-wielding Kai Green, 18, chased Nottinghamshire Police officers Amy Pannell and Daniel Griffin down North Sherwood Street, Nottingham city centre, in April. Sergeant Griffin had paused to confront Green, a convicted robber, after smelling cannabis while he stood near a parked Range Rover, leading him to shout at the officers before running off.
Mr Justice Bourne said Green “hunted” the Sergeant with a “highly dangerous” flick knife and launched an attack.
He stabbed the officer’s right buttock twice, inflicting deep injuries, and followed with a third blow to an unknown part of his body.
He also attempted to drive the knife into his chest, but Sergeant Griffin’s stab vest prevented significant injury.
The Sergeant was able to overpower his assailant using police-issued incapacitant spray, despite his stab wounds.
Green crumpled on the ground as he suffered the spray’s effects, leading to his arrest and recent five-year jail sentence.
Ex-army staffer WPC Pannell applied pressure to his wounds using her hands to stem blood loss but told how she feared he would die.
She said in a statement that she “honestly thought Daniel was going to die” and that Green had “finished” him.
She added he was “lucky to be alive” after the assault and that she would remember the incident for the rest of her life.
Sge said she feared the attacker would move on and stab her after attacking her colleague.
Sergeant Griffin, a married father and nearly eight-year Nottinghamshire Police veteran, was taken to the major trauma award at Queen’s Medical Centre for treatment after the assault.
Speaking after the attack, he said: “I’m in complete shock and feel lucky to be able to make this statement.”
“This is the most dangerous person I have ever encountered”.
He lost a “large amount of blood” and required stitches on his right buttock.
The policeman spent four months off work and has returned with scars that serve as a constant reminder of the assault.
In his statement read to courts by prosecutor Abi Joyce, he said he also feared he would die and remains shocked.
He said: “This was a ferocious attack, and I believe anything could have happened”.
Juries cleared Green of attempted murder after he pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing a bladed article in a public place.
Speaking to the defendant, Mr Justice Bourne said his actions were “so utterly out of proportion for the situation you were in”.
He branded the stabbing an “unprovoked ferocious attack” and added he considered Green “dangerous”.
Green received an extended licence period on release of three years in relation to GBH – after he serves 40 months of a five-year term – and a nine-month concurrent sentence for the knife charge.
