Police officer breaks down as she announces death of schoolgirl, 8
Police have confirmed that a girl who died following a horror crash outside The Study Prep school in Camp Road, Wimbledon, was eight years old.
Metropolitan Police, ambulance and fire service personnel gathered in Wimbledon this afternoon to provide an update to the public following this morning’s horror crash, and confirmed that a woman aged in her 40s was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving.
Clair Kelland, the Met Police PC Commander for South West London, nearly broke down in tears as she delivered the first update on behalf of the service at 3pm today.
She said: “We were called shortly before 10am after a car collided with a building at the Study Prep school on Camp road.
“A large number of our officers were deployed to the scene, along with paramedics from the London Air Ambulance and London Ambulance Service.
“Our officers, alongside colleagues from other emergency services, provided first aid to a number of people who had been injured.”
Cmdr Kelland’s voice started to crash as she announced a young girl had died at the scene.
She continued: “Very sadly, an eight-year-old girl died at the scene. Our thoughts are with her family at this incredibly difficult time.”
She confirmed that the driver of the car, a woman aged in her 40s, stopped at the scene.
She added that the driver has since been arrested for causing death by dangerous driving, and remains in police custody.
