Police made the discovery at around 11.15am by Whitby Pier in the North Yorkshire town. Roads and the pier itself are closed as officers investigate what happened.

Posting on Twitter, North Yorkshire Police said: “The body of a man has been found in Whitby and we’re asking members of the public to stay away from the pier while we deal with the incident.

“The pier has been closed at Henrietta Street and members of the public are asked to avoid the area. Thank you for your co-operation.”

No further details about the man, including his age and where he is from, have been disclosed by North Yorkshire Constabulary at this stage.

Unlike pleasure piers, such as those at Blackpool and Brighton, Whitby Piers were built for the loading of ships and protecting the harbour, which has long been an important maritime centre.

The two piers in Whitby are now Grade-II listed structures.

Last week, a pier in Swansea, south Wales, became engulfed in flames as at least seven fire engines rushed to battle a huge blaze coming from a former nightclub.

Concerned residents took to social media to share snaps of thick black smoke coming from The Mumbles.

Seven fire engines were reportedly on the scene tackling the huge blaze. Local shops, including a cafe, were evacuated.

Catherine Thomas wrote on Twitter: “Massive fire at Mumbles pier. At least seven fire engines were on the scene. Looks like the amusement and nightclub.”

The source of the fire was since confirmed to be the old Cinderella’s nightclub.
