Police arrest suspects over homophobic bus attack

Police have confirmed they have arrested suspects after a lesbian couple were beaten on a bus after refusing to kiss for a gang of men.

The attack on Melania Geymonat, 28, and her girlfriend Chris, happened on the top of a double-decker London night bus as they were travelling to Camden Town in the early hours of May 30.

A group of young men began harassing them when they discovered they were a couple, asking them to kiss while making sexual gestures.

When they refused, both women were beaten by the thugs, who were said to be in their 20s and 30s, before having their phone and bag stolen.

The Metropolitan Police Roads and Transport unit tweeted: ‘Arrests have now been made and the investigation remains ongoing.’

A Scotland Yard spokesman could not immediately provide more details.

Melania recounted the horrific events on Facebook, with the post going viral after receiving an out pour of support from social media users.

A fundraiser has now been set up for the couple by Moonpig in a bid to get the couple back on their feet.

Melanie wrote on Facebook: ‘In an attempt to calm things down, I started making jokes. I thought this might make them go away.

‘Chris even pretended she was sick, but they kept on harassing us, throwing us coins and becoming more enthusiastic about it.

‘The next thing I remember was Chris in the middle of them and they were beating her.

‘I didn’t think about it and went in. I was pulling her back and trying to defend her so they started beating me up.

‘I don’t even know if I was knocked unconscious. I felt blood, I was bleeding all over my clothes and all over the floor.

‘We went downstairs and the police were there.’

Melania said there were at least four attackers and one spoke Spanish while the others had a British accent.

Both women were taken to hospital with facial injuries.

Theresa May condemned the assault this afternoon, adding: ‘This was a sickening attack and my thoughts are with the couple affected.

‘Nobody should ever have to hide who they are or who they love and we must work together to eradicate unacceptable violence towards the LGBT community.’

Police urged anyone with information to come report it to contact police on 101 or tweet @MetCC and quote CAD737/30May.

Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
