The deranged online videos uploaded by the Plymouth killer have been called a “rallying point” for incel, involuntary celibate, extremists who praise him as a “new hero”. The Centre for Countering Digital Hate said that Plymouth killer Jake Davison’s videos are a “rallying point” for involuntary celibates. Online comments from fellow incel proponents hailed Mr Davison as a “supreme gentleman” and a “new hero”.

Another comment stated that he should “shoot for the stars” after his shooting rampage.

Now, the Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation said the UK Government is proposing to classify incels as terrorists if more attacks occur on British soil.

However, Jonathan Hall QC said the ideology that was spawned in marginalised online blogs will be difficult to categorise.

He added that the “incel movement” has disparate members and that it seems “part of right-wing terrorism but it is not really”.

Mr Hall, speaking to the BBC Radio 4 Today programme said: “The question is really whether or not the authorities want to treat the incel phenomenon as a terrorist risk.

“That would involve diverting resources or putting resources into it.

“If we see more of these sorts of attacks, then I have got no doubt that it will be treated more seriously as terrorism.

“It fits rather uneasily into the way the authorities understand ideologies. It seems part of right-wing terrorism but it is not really.

“In fact, it is quite separate from it.

“It is a different sort of ideology. The question is really one of choice.

“Do we want to start treating incels as potential terrorists?”

Mr Davison’s shooting spree has resulted in a sickening response from incel proponents online.

One fan wrote: “This is what happens when you disenfranchise men.

“I don’t approve at all of what he did, but this will continue to happen.

“It’s not just self-described incels who do it out of frustration, it’s other types of men too.

“The guys in prison are mostly incels.”

On Thursday evening six people, including a child, were killed in the mass shooting.

Mr Davison was one of those who died when he turned his gun on himself.
