Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and her family are preparing for another new edition to the family, after her mother Carole confirmed sibling Pippa is expecting a second child. She becomes the latest in a series of pregnancies linked to the Royal Family, with Zara Tindall and Meghan also expecting children this year. Detailing the news, Carole said she was hoping to see “more of my family than I could last year, including, of course, my new grandchild”.
Pippa and James already have two-year-old Arthur in their family, and will no doubt call on the close-knit Middleton family for help when the newborn arrives.
The Middletons are renowned for supporting each other, particularly after Kate married into the Firm in 2011, when she wed Prince William in a spectacular ceremony.
And when it came to Pippa’s wedding to James, the family were equally sensitive, particularly when reported concerns over Meghan and Harry being invited to the occasion emerged.
The couple wed in 2017, and just before the special day Meghan and Harry had officially confirmed they were a couple.
Fears began to rise that their first appearance together since the announcement could eclipse Pippa’s big day.
There were also claims Harry and Kate’s relationship, which before Meghan’s arrival on the royal scene had been close, had started to diminish.
This was highlighted in the 2020 book Finding Freedom, when co-authors Carolyn Durand and Omid Scobie alleged William and Harry had a row after the Duke of Cambridge called Meghan “this girl” as their relationship grew.
But in 2018, royal correspondent Emily Andrews said the Middletons remained concerned over whether or not to invite Meghan to the Berkshire wedding.

She wrote on Twitter: “Meghan faced some opposition from the Middleton family, who didn’t want to invite her to Pippa’s wedding last May.
“They feared Meghan’s first public appearance with Prince Harry would overshadow the bride’s big day.”
Harry and Meghan had been dating since 2016, and would go on to marry in 2018, in a wedding that captured the public imagination.
Meghan missed the wedding itself, but reports showed Harry travelled 50 miles back to Kensington Palace to pick Meghan up so she could attend the evening reception.

According to a source, Harry “left as discreetly as possible” and travelled with her “all the way back” to show “just how serious he is about her”.
They added to The Sun three years ago: “He didn’t want Meghan having to arrive alone, without him alongside her, at the reception.”
During Carole’s interview with Good Housekeeping, she noted how she is a “hands-on” grandmother, and is excited to see Pippa’s baby when they arrive.
She described how she wants to “run down the hills, climb trees and go through the tunnel at the playground”, when she is eventually allowed to see her grandchildren again.
The 66-year-old added: “As long as I am able to, that’s what I’ll be doing. I cook with them, I muck around dancing, we go on bike rides.”
Carole’s passion for the great outdoors is something she shares with Pippa, who is renowned for her love of endurance sport.
Pippa, 37, has competed in events across the globe, including completing a 3,000-mile cycling race across the US, and a seven-kilometre swim in Istanbul to raise money as part of her role as an ambassador to the British Heart Foundation.
In 2015, alongside her husband, she participated in a 47-mile swim, in honour of her partner’s brother who lost his life while on a mountain climbing trek.
Pippa gave birth to Arthur Michael William on October 15, 2018 at London’s St Mary’s Hospital.
