Piers Morgan PRAISES Rishi Suank after weeks of attacks on Boris’ coronavirus response
The Good Morning Britain presenter has been a fierce critic of Boris Johnson over the Government’ response to the coronavirus crisis. But he was quick to welcome Mr Sunak’s pledge to continue to support the UK’s 7.5 million furloughed workers beyond the summer.
Big and bold intervention again by the Chancellor, which will be welcome news for millions of people
Mr Morgan tweeted: “Big and bold intervention again by the Chancellor, which will be welcome news for millions of people.”
Mr Sunak’s furlough scheme – which pays 80 percent of a worker’s salary up to a £2,500 monthly cap – will remain unchanged until the end of July and then continue with employers expected to start footing some of the multi-billion pound bill.
Mr Sunak told MPs that from August there will be greater flexibility in order to allow furloughed staff to begin returning to work.
He said: “Employers currently using the scheme will be able to bring furloughed employees back part-time.
“And we will ask employers to start sharing with the Government the cost of paying people’s salaries.”
Staff will continue to receive the current level of support through a combination of state and employer contributions.
Mr Morgan has become a vocal critic of the Government’s handling of the health crisis and yesterday attacked ministers for refusing to appear on his show.
He said Mr Johnson should be ashamed over the Government’s decision to “boycott” Good Morning Britain.
He tweeted it was “disgraceful” the Prime Minister was “refusing” to go on the show during the coronavirus pandemic.
The presenter claimed “cowardly” ministers were choosing “soft-soap interviews” so they did not have to face “tough questioning”.
He tweeted: “The Government is once again refusing to put anybody up for interview on GMB.
“This is the 10th consecutive day they have boycotted the show during Britain’s worst crisis since WW2. What a disgraceful way to treat our viewers.”
Earlier, he clashed with Tory backbencher Andrew Bridgen who appeared on the show to back Mr Johnson’s new lockdown rules but appeared confused by Government strategy.
Mr Morgan raged: “You are a Conservative Member of Parliament, who thinks you know exactly what Boris Johnson has been saying, and you just told me to do something I’m not allowed to do.
“So this is the problem isn’t it? There is no clarity.
“It’s a load of flannel, talking about controlling the virus, you as a leading high profile conservative politician haven’t got a clue about what these rules, actually mean, and you’re an MP. You’re part of this.”
