Piers Morgan launches scathing attack on Boris’ new rules – ‘Second wave is on you!’
In a scathing rant on social media, Piers Morgan accused the Government of giving contradictory advice to the British public, on the day some lockdown restrictions were officially eased for the first time in nearly two months. The Good Morning Britain co-host also accused Mr Johnson of starting the lockdown which began on March 23 too late and relaxing some of the measures too early amid growing economic pressure.
Mr Morgan made the remarks on Twitter after the Prime Minister re-posted parts of his speech from Sunday evening – where he reiterated the five coronavirus tests which must be met for the country to move forward.
From today the Government has advised millions of Britons to go back to work if they cannot do their jobs from home but insisted they should avoid using public transport, and abide by social distancing measures.
In addition, two people from different households can now meet outdoors, as long as they keep their distance, and people can also undertake unlimited exercise.
Garden centres and golf courses have also been given the green light to reopen.
Mr Morgan wrote on Twitter: “Your contradictory new rules make no sense.
“After starting the lockdown far too late, you’ve now recklessly ended the lockdown far too soon – purely for economic reasons.
“If there is now a major second wave of infections/deaths, that will be on you, Prime Minister.”
During his speech on Sunday, Mr Johnson insisted the lockdown would not be ended but Britain would be moving into a second phase.
He told the nation: “This is not the time simply to end the lockdown this week.
“Instead we are taking the first careful steps to modify our measures.”
However, the Government has come under criticism this morning after images emerged in London of people crammed on to public transport during the morning commute to work.
At PMQs this afternoon the Prime Minister insisted he did not want overcrowding on public transport in the capital and insists he wants to see “proper marshalling” at stations.
Mr Johnson added he did not want people to travel during peak times although many employees do not have the luxury of deciding when they go to work.
He told the Commons: “I don’t want to see crowding on mass public transport in our capital or anywhere else and we’re working very actively with TfL to ensure that what we do is we have more capacity.
“We discourage people from going to work during the peak and that the operators, in particular TfL, lay on particularly more Tube trains when those are necessary throughout the day.
