The Good Morning Britain presenter fumed on Twitter at people moaning about wearing masks. It comes after the Government announced face coverings will become mandatory in supermarkets and other shops in England from July 24.

Morgan tweeted: “The WW2 generation had to fight in godforsaken trenches and see their friends blown to pieces.

“We’re being asked to wear a face mask when we go shopping.

“Can everyone please get a bl**dy grip. The whiners are absolutely pathetic.”

Many of the Good Morning Britain presenter’s followers were quick to agree with him.

One said: “Something I actually agree with you on! It’s embarrassing how people are complaining about such a simple thing, they don’t know what hardship is, it’s pathetic.”

Another commented: “I’m struggling to believe that ppl are being so dramatic about having to wear a face mask like it’s a great sacrifice.”

A third wrote: “It’s actually quite comical reading some of the posts on this subject. I don’t always agree with Piers but he has a good point. Both my grandfather’s fought in France and Flanders in WW1. My father fought behind the Japanese lines in Burma, you only have to wear a mask.”

Another said: “Could not agree more. This is a small price to pay to protect others. Just shows what a selfish society we live in.”

A fifth added: “Totally agree with you on this one.”

But other Twitter users disagreed with the former newspaper editor.

One asked: “We didn’t need them at the start so why now??”

Another commented: “Certainly not whiners, the country has reduced the spread of COVID-19 from the simplicity of social distancing, hygiene and common sense, the wearing of a face covering is not going to have any impact in further reducing COVID-19 than the current measures already in place.”

One more said: “They fought for our FREEDOM hence why people aren’t happy.”

From next Friday people must wear face coverings when they go shopping or risk being slapped with a £100 fine.

Face masks have been compulsory on public transport since mid-June.

And wearing face coverings in shops is already mandatory in Scotland.

Speaking in the Commons today, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said face coverings will help protect shop workers and boost the confidence of customers.

He told MPs: “In recent weeks we have re-opened retail and footfall is rising.

“We want to give people more confidence to shop safely and enhance protection for those who work in shops. Both of these can be done by the use of face coverings.

“Sadly sales assistants, cashiers and security guards have suffered disproportionately in this crisis.

“The death rate of sales and retail assistants is 75 percent higher amongst men and 60 percent higher amongst women than in the general population.”

Environment Secretary George Eustice said the rules will not come into force until later this month to give people time to prepare.

He told BBC Breakfast: “We want to give people time to plan and prepare and for retailers to maybe put in place measures to encourage people to do this or potentially even to have some masks themselves if people haven’t got one.

“Once you make something mandatory as we’re doing now for retail environments it sends a much stronger signal that people will follow in greater numbers.”
