Piers Morgan condemned by Lord Sugar in bitter coronavirus Twitter attack

Piers Morgan apologises for not wearing mask in taxi

Lord Sugar launched the attack after Mr Morgan was caught getting into a taxi without wearing a face covering. Pictures surfaced over the weekend of Mr Morgan getting into the back of a black cab without his face mask on after a night out with his wife Celia in London.

The 55-year-old – who has been a fierce critic of rule-breakers during the pandemic – admitted he forgot to put on the mask before entering the vehicle and corrected the mistake a few seconds later.

Mr Morgan received a huge backlash on social media and even branded himself a “Covidiot” for the error.

In one post on Twitter, Mr Morgan sparked further outrage after he wrote “fair enough” to a headline which read: “Taxi for Piers Moron!”

Lord Sugar hit out and claimed the reaction would have been different had it been the Prime Minister or a member of parliament.

Writing on Twitter, Lord Sugar said: “Caught without a mask on @PiersMorgan.

“What does he say ‘fair enough’ can you imagine the noise he would have made on @GMB if it was Boris or some other MP in the same scenario.

“BRUSHED UNDER THE CARPET DUAL STANDARD.”

Former Manchester United and England footballer Gary Neville also hit out at his “fair enough” remark.

He said: “It’s not it’s ridiculous.”

Mr Morgan then clarified his comments, he said: “No, I think if you hold others public figures to account for rule-breaking, as I do, than you have to be held to the same account even if it was a relatively minor infraction that I corrected within seconds.”

Reports of the coronavirus breach first emerged on Sunday and Mr Morgan was quick to acknowledge his mistake and reiterated the importance of wearing a face covering.

He said: “I did breach covid rules for a few seconds by forgetting to put my mask on before I got in the cab.

“Fortunately, I remembered as we pulled away & put it on. Masks help save lives, so it’s very important we all remember to wear them when we should.”

In another post after being condemned on social media, Mr Morgan once again held his hands up and took full responsibility.

The GMB anchor said: “I haven’t made an excuse, I just explained what happened. I’m guilty as charged.

“For a few seconds, I was a Covidiot & I deserve the full wrath of Twitter hell to now descend on me.”
