The US breakfast show host said she had called the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who quit royal duties last year and have moved to America, following their bombshell interview. Ms King claimed she was told Harry had spoken to his father and brother, but the talks were “not productive”.

Taking to Twitter, Mr Morgan accused Meghan and Harry of having “betrayed” the royals “again”.

And he questioned how fruitful they expect future contact with the Royal Family to be after Ms King’s revelations.

The ex-Good Morning Britain presenter tweeted: “How ‘productive’ does Ms King think those conversations will be going forward, now her Sussex chums have betrayed Harry’s family – again – in such shamelessly disloyal fashion?”

The Sussexes made a set of incendiary claims about the Royal Family in their tell-all TV interview, which aired earlier this month, including allegations of racism.

In a further tweet, Mr Morgan – who quit GMB last week after refusing to apologise for saying he did not believe claims made by Meghan in the controversial interview – insisted it is “time to stand up for our Queen”.

He fumed: “There’s a very deliberate & malicious campaign being perpetrated by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to smear, defame and trash Britain, our Monarchy & the Royal Family as a bunch of heartless racists.

“It’s disgusting. Time to stand up for our Queen.”

Ms King told CBS This Morning she had called the Sussexes and was told Harry had spoken to Prince Charles and Prince William, but suggested he was not happy with the outcome of the chats.

She said: “I’m not trying to break news, but I did actually call them to see how they were feeling and it’s true Harry has talked to his brother and he has talked to his father too.

“The word I was given was that those conversations were not productive but they are glad that they have at least started a conversation.

“And I think what is still upsetting to them is that the palace keeps saying they want to work it out privately, but yet they believe these false stories are coming out that are very disparaging against Meghan still – no one in the Royal Family has talked to Meghan yet at this particular time.

“I think it’s frustrating for them to see that it’s a racial conversation about the Royal Family when all they wanted all along was for the royals to intervene and tell the press to stop with the unfair, inaccurate, false stories that definitely have a racial slant.

“Until you can acknowledge that, I think it’s going to be hard to move forward.

“They both want to move forward with this and they both want healing in this family. At the end of the day, that is Harry’s family.”

Ms King, who attended Meghan’s lavish 2019 baby shower in New York, also defended her friend against the bullying accusations made by former staff of the Sussexes.

She said: “Anyone who’s worked with her will tell you exactly who she is, she’s really a sweet caring person.

“As I say, Meghan has documents to back up everything that she said on Oprah’s interview. Everything.”

In a statement, the royals hinted they did not agree with all of Meghan and Harry’s claims.

The statement released by Buckingham Palace a week ago highlighted how “some recollections may vary”.

Prince Philip was in hospital as the royal drama unfolded and finally reunited with the Queen today.
