The Duke and Duchess of Sussex opened up about their time in the Royal Family to Oprah Winfrey in an interview that aired on ITV last night. Piers, who has criticised Meghan numerous times previously, said on his breakfast show that he did not believe the Duchess when she said she experienced suicidal thoughts. Ofcom then announced they would be launching an investigation after they received 41,000 complaints about these comments.
Chief Executive Carolyn McCall said they were “dealing with” Piers and then ITV announced that Piers had actually quit as presenter of the show.
A statement read: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.
“ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”
It is unknown who will replace Piers, who has presented the show on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays along with Susanna Reid since 2015.
Given Piers’ apparent contempt for Meghan and Harry, it may be as a surprise to some that he used to be friendly with the Suits actress.
They started talking on Twitter back in 2015, when Piers followed Meghan and she messaged him to tell him she was “a big fan”.
They started exchanging messages, which often involved the plot of the legal drama Meghan starred in, and Meghan even sent him previews of episodes before they aired.
When Meghan came to London in the summer of 2016, she messaged Piers asking if he wanted to meet up.
She came from Wimbledon, where she was watching her friend Serena Williams play tennis, to meet Piers at his local pub in Kensington, The Scarsdale Tavern.
Describing Meghan as an “old mate” on Good Morning Britain in 2017, he recalled: “We had 90 minutes in my local pub over a dirty martini and a pint of hand-pumped Harvey’s.
“Trust me, I’ll be milking that 90 minutes if she becomes our princess for the rest of my days.”
He even claimed that the two of them were “great buddies”.

After meeting up with Piers, he believes she went straight to a private members club to meet Prince Harry.
It was after then, he claimed, that Meghan “went cold” and it was the last time he ever spoke to her.
She explained: “She met Prince Harry at the dinner that night, went on a solo date with him the next day, and I never heard from her again.
“Not a word. I’d been ghosted.”
At the time, Piers seemed to have taken this in his stride, joking: “Next thing I know, silence. Off the radar. I blame Harry.

At the time of the engagement announcement in November 2017, Piers was still on the couple’s good side, saying that Harry had “picked a real keeper”, addingly, jokingly: “Even if your romance did destroy my beautiful friendship with the amazing Meghan Markle.”
However, as time went on, Piers started to criticise Meghan more and more.
At the time of her wedding, he questioned her decision not to tend to her father, who had taken ill.
He said: “I still like Meghan, notwithstanding her disconcerting tendency to ‘ghost’ people when they’ve served their purpose.
After the wedding, Piers’ criticism of Meghan increased in enthusiasm and frequency, especially after they stepped down as senior royals last year.
All this culminated in his very controversial show this morning, in which he said: “I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said, Meghan Markle.
“I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report.”
