People share ridiculous temperatures of 53.9°C on their garden thermometers

As the UK bakes in what is likely to become its hottest ever heatwave on record, some unlucky people have been left roasting at home.

While those of us with access to air conditioning sit smugly in our well-chilled offices, the mercury outside is set to exceed 40°C today for the first time on record.

So far during the heatwave the country has been engulfed by travel chaos, with airports suspending flights yesterday as the blistering sun led to runways ‘melting’.

And some people have highlighted just how incredibly hot their gardens are in the sun, with their outdoor thermometers recording temperatures of more than 40°C or even 50°C.

Jane Arthurs recorded a ridiculous temperature of 53.9°C in a sunny part of her front garden.

Other Twitter users have also been sharing photos of their mercury soaring, with some even competing to see who could record the highest temperature.

Locations were spread across the country – from Cambridge in England to the Phoenix Park in Dublin, Ireland.

Most agreed it was far too hot to sit out in the sun in their gardens yesterday, and the same is expected today.
