Pensioner finally busted after driving without licence for over 70 years
A man in his 80s who had been driving with no licence or insurance since he was a child has finally been caught by police.
The unnamed motorist had been driving illegally for more than 70 years in a real-life ‘Catch Me If You Can’ tale.
But he was eventually caught out near a Tesco Extra on Wednesday evening when a police patrol out in Nottingham pulled him over in his blue Mini One.
He told officers he was born in 1938 and admitted that he had been driving with no documents since he was twelve – but fortunately for him, had never been stopped in the past.
In a popular post on Facebook, police said: ‘We can’t quite believe what happened… as the driver, who was born in 1938, coughed that he had been driving with no licence and no insurance, since he was 12 (yes TWELVE) years old… and somehow had managed to never be stopped by the police.
‘Thankfully, he had never had an accident, caused anyone an injury, and never made anyone lose out financially, by hitting them whilst uninsured.
‘Due to the increased number of ANPR cameras in Nottingham, even on the small trips, you are likely to hit a camera, so make sure your documents are in order… because it will catch up with you… one day.’
With more than one million uninsured drivers on UK roads, police also apologised for letting this one slip through the net for so long.
Initially, residents of Nottinghamshire were in hysterics over the gaffe and some even insisted the driver should be given an ‘honorary’ licence.
Others, however, called the local force ‘utterly useless’ for letting a man drive illegally for so long.
One Facebook user Luke Saunders said: ‘Proves how good the police are lmfao and how would you know if he has no record to track.
‘You just admitted to the world that your officers are useless, took you that long to catch him, think some training is needed.’
