A retired teacher has died in hospital days after being the victim of an alleged assault. Peter Ormerod suffered serious injuries following the incident in Burry Port in Carmarthenshire, Wales, on Saturday night, September 24.
However, four days after the alleged attack, Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed the 75-year-old had died, reports Wales Online.
In a tribute, Mr Ormerod was described by his family as a “very loved and loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend.”
His loved ones added that he was also regarded as a “well-respected teacher and member of the community.”
Widower Mr Ormerod, who was originally from the Bury area, was a mathematics teacher at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School for Boys in Carmarthen and, before that, at Bro Myrddin Welsh Comprehensive School.
Tributes have poured in from former pupils following the news of his death, who described him as a fantastic teacher and a true gentleman.
One wrote on social media: “So sad. He got me through 5 years of math in 6 months to pass O Level which I needed to get to college where other teachers had failed miserably!”
Another said: “[I] had to resit my maths GCSE because my maths teacher was awful, he always sat us down and made sure we understood everything before he moved on. He was such a lovely man.”
A third wrote: “Amazing teacher with time to help anyone. Deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
Burry Port county councillor Shelley Godfrey-Coles also commented on the news, writing: “Our thoughts are with family and friends at this difficult time.”
On Wednesday, September 28, detectives said that they had charged 39-year-old Hywel David Williams, of North Clive Street in Grangetown, Cardiff, with GBH.
He appeared at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court – where he only spoke briefly to confirm his identity before being remanded into custody.
As of 9pm on Wednesday, police have not yet provided a further update if there are going to be any new charges.
However, in the meantime, officers are continuing an appeal for information.
Those able to help should contact Dyfed-Powys Police via the 101 telephone number.
