Passengers locked in station when staff left for the night before train arrived
A group of passengers were forced to find a way out of a train station after staff locked up for the night.
Around 30 people were trapped in Oxenholme station, Cumbria, when they arrived on a service that was nearly two hours late.
The driver offered to take the commuters to the next station where they could get cabs home.
Some people declined and took matters into their own hands.
At least one man resorted to climbing over a 7ft spiked gate but others were unable to do it.
Passenger Rhiannon Neale, 26, told the Daily Mail: ‘There was quite a lot of swearing and angry shouting as we were all exhausted and it was after midnight by then.’
They were eventually free when a maintenance worker was spotted on the track and he had a queue.
The trip, which is usually just over three hours, took a total of 12 hours because of cancelled trains, a long wait for new crews to take over, and a line-side fire.
At one point, people ‘gave up on sighing and just began to laugh at the utter farce’, Dawn said.
LNER apologised and encouraged Dawn to make a claim but she said ‘that does not compensate me for my time’.
Avanti West Coast said: ‘We’re sorry to hear about the experience of the customers who were at Oxenholme station. We’re currently looking into the circumstances of what happened.
‘We’d like to thank the Network Rail team on site for their swift action in getting our customers out of the station safely.’
