Parts of UK set for White Christmas before 'snowbomb' hits in time for New Year

A White Christmas is in store for many parts of the country as Brits brace for sub-zero temperatures.

Snow could even fall in London and the South East on December 25, as strong winds batter much of the UK.

As colder air starts to push southwards from Christmas Eve, much of the North may already be blanketed in the white stuff, forecasters predict.

But skies will still be bright in many places this weekend, with a mixture of sunshine and snow showers predicted for northern Scotland over December 25 and 26.

Deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, Helen Caughey, said: ‘With colder air meeting milder air over the UK, the specific details of the forecast for Christmas Day are still a little uncertain.

‘Milder air moves north-east over much of the country by the middle of the week, with spells of rain for most at times, which will turn to snow over higher ground in northern Scotland initially.

‘The boundary between the milder and colder air is then forecast to sink south later on Christmas Eve and through Christmas Day, introducing colder, clearer conditions for some.

‘However exactly where this boundary gets to is hard to pin down at the moment, and is key as to where can expect any snow over Christmas.’

A Met Office spokesperson said there is a ‘small chance’ that we could we snow over London on Christmas Day.

At least one snowflake must be observed falling somewhere in the UK in the 24 hours of December 25 to qualify as a White Christmas, according to the Met Office.

This happens on just over half of all Christmas Days in the country, according to meteorologists.

A heavy ‘snowbomb’ is also set to hit the south coast on December 27, as Storm Corrie sweeps the country.

If the air pressure of the storm deepens by 24millibars in 24 hours, it will earn the title of ‘weather bomb’, the Sun reports.

Jimv Dale, of British Weather Services, said: ‘We are expecting one more major storm this month which will set the trend for coming months.

‘We expect five to six storms to hit through the winter period which could be severe enough to warrant naming.’

Around 1cm of snow is expected in just one hour in the North West on December 27.

This is expected to rise to 2cm per hour in the North West, the south of Scotland, Southampton and Cardiff.
