Parts of Kyiv without power after reports of missile strikes across Ukraine
Vladmir Putin has ramped up attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure as he sent Russian missiles targeting electricity and water supplies.
Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, said parts of the city were without power on Monday morning as witnesses reported at least five explosions across the capital.
Meanwhile there were also reports of strikes in Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and the Cherkasy region, in central Ukraine.
In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, the underground system was stopped after the power failed while Zaporzhzhia and Cherkasy were suffering blackouts.
Russia has been targeting civilian infrastructure in an apparent attempt to freeze Ukrainians in their homes as winter hits.
Facing setbacks on the battlefield, Moscow seems to be targeting civilians to break their will to continue the war. Such attacks are war crimes, under international law.
Several explosions have been heard in Kyiv this morning, according to Ukrainian officials and local media reports.
Senior presidential adviser Anton Gerashchenko said at least three explosions sounded across the city while 40 Russian cruise missiles were fired on Ukraine.
The Kyiv Independent tweeted: ‘Around 7-8 explosions were heard in Kyiv and Kyiv region early on Monday. The cause of the explosions is currently unknown.’
Oleksiy Kuleba, governor of Kyiv region, has meanwhile used to Telegram to say that the air alert continues and to urge people to stay in shelters. He posted: ‘There is a possibility of repeated shelling.
‘Do not photograph the place of arrivals or the work of the air defence. Remember your own safety.’
Ukraine has not commented on the issue, while the UK defence ministry said Russia was ’peddling false claims on an epic scale.’
