Paris Maria Callas square to be re-named after Princess Diana

The distinction has already been agreed by officials in the French capital and is set to be ratified next month.

“It’s a testament to how much Paris loved Lady Di,” said a council source, using the name the French still give the late royal.

The new “Place Diana Princess of Wales” is directly above the underpass where Diana, her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and their driver Henri Paul sustained fatal injuries on August 31, 1997.

The move overturns a decision a month before the crash to name the square after the late opera singer Maria Callas.

It quickly became an unofficial memorial, and well-wishers to this day leave flowers and photos commemorating Diana’s life.

The source said: “The Maria Callas square never really got going – the square became associated with Diana so quickly.”
