Pallbearers who carried late Queen’s coffin given royal welcome at Wimbledon
The team of 11 soldiers from the 1st Battalion Grenadier were invited to watch the famous tennis tornament on Saturday, July 8. They were applauded by the crowd at Wimbledon, with presenter Clare Balding telling the Centre Court that they were “proud” to welcome them at the event. All eleven of them were seated in the Royal Box, alongside the likes of four of the Lionesses including Leah Williamson and Beth Mead.

Introducing the team, Balding said: “Alongside the Royal Box we are also particularly proud this year to welcome and thank the team of 11 members of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards who so nobly acted as pallbearers at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
“And to the Ensign for the escort of Her Majesty’s procession in London who carried the Queen’s company colour, the Royal Standard of the regiment, for Her Majesty’s funeral in Windsor.”
During her reign, the unit held a special place in the late Queen’s heart.
As serving monarch, she took on the position as company commander, carefully taking the time to review the company every decade.

In March 2023, eight of the pallbearers were awarded the silver Royal Victorian Medal in recognition for their important role at the late Queen’s funeral, which took place last September.
Their present in the Royal Box comes after Lance Sergeant Alex Turner, Lance Corporal Tony Flynn, Lance Sergeant Elias Orlowski, Guardsman Fletcher Cox, Guardsman James Patterson, Lance Sergeant Ryan Griffiths, Guardsman Luke Simpson, and Guardsman David Sanderson were named as recipients of honours under the Royal Victorian Order (RVO) in recognition of their service to the Queen, as part of a special set of Demise awards.
Guardsman Fletcher Cox, who was at the time only 19, was the youngest one chosen to carry the late monarch’s funeral.
He previously said that it was his “sole ambition” to parade for the late Queen.

On July 4, Kate made a surprise appearance to watch Katie Boulter on the Outer Courts.
A regular fixture at the famous tennis tournament, Kate delighted fans with her appearance and greeted fans on her arrival.
The mother-of-three looked glamorous in a white skirt and smart green jacket.
