Harpo Productions aired the two-hour programme in the US on Sunday before it was broadcast on ITV the following day. On Monday Britons woke up to the shocking news that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had publicly accused an unnamed member of the Royal Family of racism – the identity is not known by Oprah confirmed it was not the Queen or Prince Philip.

According to The Daily Mail, palace insiders are dismayed that they were denied an opportunity to issue a reply to the Sussexes’ devastating claims before the interview aired.

In the UK, it is acceptable practice for media outlets to provide a right of reply to anyone accused of wrongdoing.

Harpo, Oprah’s company, said in response: “The interview was intended to be a conversation with the couple.

“The palace was not contacted to participate in or respond to the interview.”

Meghan, 39, also claimed palace aides and the institution’s human resources department had denied her psychological help when she felt suicidal.

Buckingham Palace waited until Tuesday evening to release a statement in response to the bombshell allegations.

Snippets of the interview were available for Britons to view online on Monday morning but viewers had to wait until the evening to watch the full show.

The Queen, 94, is said to have delayed the release of a statement responding to Harry and Meghan’s claims.

A statement was prepared on Monday but the monarch decided to sleep on it.

And the following day she decided to reject the original statement in favour of a second.

According to The Daily Mail, palace staff felt “angry and let down” by Harry and Meghan’s shocking interview.

Many had supported the prince and his wife during an “extremely difficult and trying three years”.

One source said: “Staff are reeling.

“But there is [also] a strong sense of needing to retain a dignified silence and show kindness and compassion.”

Meanwhile Meghan and Harry are showing no signs of regret over their interview with Oprah, which sent shockwaves through the Royal Family.

The couple have settled into their £11million Montecito mansion in Santa Barbara, California, and spoke of their joy over their newfound freedoms.

Harry said he loves taking little Archie for bike rides while Meghan said she enjoys family time at a nearby beach.

The Sussexes invited Oprah to their mansion and were seen in a number of clips chatting casually to her in their chicken coop.

The pair rescued hens who were facing slaughter at a factory farm.

A very visibly pregnant Meghan said she and her husband are enjoying a more “authentic” life across the pond.

She said: “I think just being able to live authentically.

“This kind of stuff is so basic, but it’s really fulfilling and about getting back to basics.”
