Over 12,500 care home residents died from coronavirus in two months
Over a quarter of all care home residents who died between March 2 and May 1 were linked to coronavirus, the Office for National Statistics confirmed today.
There were 45,899 deaths of care home residents during that period, the ONS said.
Of those, 12,526 deaths involved coronavirus – a total of 27.3%.
The most common pre-existing condition found among deaths involving coronavirus was Dementia and Alzheimer disease. The disease was a factor in 42.5% of all care home resident deaths with Covid-19.
While data comparing the number of deaths in England and Wales between December 28 2019 and May 1 2020 found that 23,136 more people died this year than the same period the year previous.
Overall, 17.1% of all deaths in care home residents in the year-to-date involved coronavirus.
