One of ‘UK’s most prolific criminals’ told to behave for a week to avoid jail

One of the UK’s most prolific criminals has been told that he has to stay out of trouble for just a week to avoid going back to jail.

Jordan Burgess, 43, was told by Derby Crown Court that if he did not attend his next probation report he would be jailed.

His latest offences include shoplifting which he has allegedly done multiple times during his life.

Mr Burgess’ offending history has previously been described as “horrendous”.

Although his past offences would not normally see Burgess sent to a higher court, they have meant he has breached a crown court suspended sentence, which he was given last year for repeatedly hitting his partner over the head with a sound speaker.

In the dock last week, Judge Shaun Smith KC became suspicious about his behaviour. He said: “It sounds like he’s had something?”

In response, Burgess’s barrister, Darron Whitehead said: “That’s the methadone, your honour, and he has slurred speech.”

Speaking to Burgess, Judge Smith said: “You have got an appointment next Monday with the probation service. Do you know where it is?”

Burgess replied it was Swadlincote police station and later admitted he was “guessing, really”.

DerbyshireLive reported that the judge said: “I am going to put your case back to next Wednesday and if you turn up for this appointment I am going to give you another period of time to prove to me you can carry on with this (suspended sentence) order.

“But if you don’t turn up for the appointment on Monday I am going to lock you up.”

Burgess’s most recent offences occurred when he entered both a Nisa and Sainsburys in Swadlincote, Derbyshire and stole from both shops.

Following his arrest, Burgess pleaded guilty to both offences and said he was in breach of a suspended sentence order.

The suspended sentence order was handed to him at Derby Crown Court when he pleaded guilty to assault charges occasioning actual bodily harm.

When officers investigated the case, they found he had left the victim bleeding and screaming for help.

Despite the attack, the victim reportedly still sent Burgess cards while he was in prison.

At a 2022 hearing, he reportedly told a judge over a link from HMP Nottingham that he wouldn’t let them down and that he wanted to get back to work.

When he was handed a 46-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months, Recorder Penelope Stanistreet Keen said: “It is clear that the relationship between you and (the victim) was unhealthy at the time but whatever led up to this there is no excuse for hitting her over the head with a speaker.

“You appear to have a troubling attitude towards relationships, I have read the transcript of the 999 call and she is clearly distressed and I have seen the injuries to her eye.”

Burgess has a range of convictions dating back a quarter of a century, including a number for violence and assaults. More recently, his offending has been shop thefts and even stealing a charity box from a pub.
