One dead after HGV horror crash – emergency services scrambled as police close major road

Emergency services have been scrambled to provide support and the police have closed a major road in the area. The incident, which happened shortly after 3am on Sunday, took place on the A4119 near Tonyrefail. The road remains closed and police are still at the scene. It is shut between two roundabouts – The Coed Ely roundabout and Tonyrefail roundabout.
The collision involved a heavy goods vehicle and a 35-year-old male pedestrian.
He was declared dead at the scene.
Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
Fire services were called to the scene shortly after 3am.
A spokesperson for the service said: “We received a call at 3.03am this morning regarding a road traffic collision on the A4119, Tonyrefail.
“One fire crew was sent to the scene and remain in attendance, assisting police and providing lighting.”
A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: “South Wales Police is investigating a road traffic collision which happened between the Coed Ely roundabout and the Tonyrefail roundabout, Tonyrefail, shortly after 3am on Sunday, February 13.
“The collision involved a heavy goods vehicle, which was travelling northbound, and a male pedestrian.
“The 35 year-old male, from the Pentre area, was declared deceased at the scene.
“Collision investigation officers remain at the scene and the road is likely to remain closed in both directions for some time.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.”
According to traffic monitoring service Inrix, the road closure has caused delays between Tonypandy, north of Tonyrefail, and the M4.
They reported: “A4119 in both directions closed due to serious accident from Ely Valley Road (CoedEly Roundabout, CoedEly) to A4093 (Tonyrefail).
“Traffic is coping well.
“Affecting traffic between M4 J34 (Miskin) and Tonypandy.”
Just after the incident took place, South Wales police said: “We are at the scene of a serious collision between the Coed Ely roundabout and the Tonyrefail roundabout on the A4119.
“The road in between these two roundabouts is currently closed in both directions. It is expected to remain closed for some time.
“Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible.
“Delays are expected in the area.”
