Officer seriously injured in crash with 4×4 being chased by police

A major investigation has been launched after a police officer was seriously injured in a crash involving a car that was being pursued.

The crash, which took place shortly after 4am this morning, saw officers attempting to stop a Range Rover Discovery being driven erratically on Wood End Road, Birmingham.

Following a brief pursuit, a police patrol car that was not involved in the chase, collided with the 4×4 which was being followed by other officers.

The officer not involved in the pursuit, suffered pelvic, leg and shoulder injuries following the incident and remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

His family have been informed and are by his side.

A 37-year-old-man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

Chief Insp Tony Cole, Force Incident Manager, said: ‘An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of what took place this morning and I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision to get in touch.’

A police cordon remains in place, with collision investigation cones dotted along the street and around the smashed up police car.

Part of the car’s bumper can be seen 25 yards away from where the car came to rest.
