Nursing student killed in hit-and-run by street racers on Christmas Day

Police in Los Angeles are searching for a suspect after a nursing student was killed in a hit-and-run by a driver performing donuts at an illegal ‘street takeover’ on Christmas Day.

About 100 people gathered around 9pm on Christmas Day to watch Los Angeles drivers show off their cars at a massive illegal gathering in the Hyde Park neighborhood.

But chaos broke out after one driver lost control of his car.

‘A vehicle engaged in exhibition of speed at an illegal street takeover lost control, ran off the roadway, and collided into a group of spectators on the northwest corner of Florence Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard,’ the Los Angeles Police Department stated.

Elyzza Guajaca, 24, was identified as the victim and plowed into the crowd at the street takeover. She was severely injured when the car – a black Chevrolet Camaro – pinned her against a light pole.

Guajaca was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries.

Several other people were injured in the violent collision, which was captured on video by onlookers. At least two onlookers were thrown to the ground, and a third person is seen being beaten by the driver of the Camaro.

However, police say these victims were carried off by others and have yet to report the crimes.

‘We’re releasing video and images of these other victims, hoping someone knows who they are,’ LAPD Detective Ryan Moreno said.

Police believe at least a few victims have serious injuries. ‘For all we know, they could be laid up in a hospital somewhere,’ Moreno said.

The detective believes the reason the victims have not come forward yet due to a code of silence followed by people in LA’s street racing culture.

‘Somebody will get beaten nearly to death, and they don’t come forward to be a victim. It’s just part of how it goes,’ he said.

Police are offering a $50,000 reward for information about the suspect, who was last seen fleeing from the scene after jumping out of his Camaro.

Investigators have recovered the car, but are still looking for the driver, additional witnesses, and more victims.

Guajaca’s family created a GoFundMe to raise money for her funeral expenses.

‘My sister was an aunty to my beautiful girls who loved her so much,’ her brother Louie Guajaca wrote. He said Elyzza was ‘the rock to our family’ and described her as ‘a good, goofy, funny, outgoing person.’
