A nurse is on trial at Manchester Crown Court accused of the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of a further 10. Lucy Letby, 32, of Arran Avenue, Hereford, is alleged to have participated in a year-long killing spree while working in the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital.

She denies all the allegations made against her.

The trial began yesterday, October 4, as unreportable legal issues were aired in court.

The defendant wore a dark suit as she appeared in the dock on Tuesday, to confirm her name.

She is facing charges that she murdered five boys and two girls between June 2015 and June 2016.

Ms Letby is also accused of attempting to kill another five boys and five girls at the neonatal clinic in the same period.

The hearing – which is estimated to last up to six months – was then adjourned till tomorrow, October 6, when legal arguments are expected to be heard.

Ms Letby’s parents, John, 76, and Susan, 62, watched on as proceedings were relayed to annexes in the courthouse for families of the alleged victims and the press.

A court order on the trial prohibits the reporting of the identities of the children allegedly attacked by Ms Letby.

It also forbids the naming of parents or witnesses connected with the children.
