NOT AGAIN! Royal protocol nearly broken as Donald Trump panics with Queen

Mr Trump nearly broke the royal protocol just minutes after arriving at Buckingham Palace alongside with his wife Melania. Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, welcomed the US President in the splendid garden of the monarch’s official residence in London after he landed in his state helicopter.

The US President and the First Lady were honoured with 82 gun salutes fired by members of the Guard of Honour, marking both the arrival of Mr Trump to the UK and the anniversary of the Queen’s coronation, which was yesterday.

After the cannons stopped, Mr Trump was led onto the terrace by the Queen, followed by the First Lady, Prince Charles and Camilla.

The party then listened to the US national anthem, after which Mr Trump was given the honour of inspecting the Guard of Honour, which symbolically represents the best of the UK’s military.

The royal protocol would see the Commander of the guards inviting the US President and a representative of the British monarchy down the stairs to take a closer look at Britain’s soldiers.

However, after receiving the invitation of the Commander, Mr Trump seemed unsure about what to do, whether he should let the Queen go first or simply walk down the stairs by himself.

After a brief moment of panic, Prince Charles came to the US President’s rescue and, with an open arm, led him down the terrace – leaving the Queen behind.

This is not the first time Mr Trump struggles to follow the protocol of the Royal Family.

During last year’s visit to Windsor, the US President walked in front of the Queen as they inspected her Honour Guards.

His faux pas forced the monarch to walk around him to regain her position alongside Mr Trump.

One of the major “don’ts” those meeting the Queen should always bear in mind is to never turn their back to the monarch, as it is considered incredibly rude.

Mr Trump and his wife have also broke with the tradition as they chose not to curtsy or bow to the monarch and the other senior royals but greet them with a handshake.

While handshakes go against the royal tradition, they are still permitted.

According to the Royal Family’s official website: “There are no obligatory codes of behaviour when meeting the Queen or a member of the Royal Family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms.”

The guideline notes: “For men this is a neck bow (from the head only) whilst women do a small curtsy.

“Other people prefer simply to shake hands in the usual way.”
