And similar incidents have been reported up and down the country, including in Birmingham and Leeds. The sorry episode was highlighted by Telegraph columnist Madeleine Grant, who said her mother would have “flayed her alive” had she acted in a similar fashion.

Others weighed in with support, suggesting people should have “more respect”, especially coming at the end of an extended period during which they had not been able to enjoy the great outdoors.

Parliamentary sketch writer Ms Grant tweeted a shocking clip of Endcliffe Park in Sheffield, covered in empty bottles, cans and other garbage.

She commented: “I’d say I’m a libertarian but nothing brings out my inner General Franco more than litter. My mum would have flayed us alive for this.”

TalkRADIO presenter Julia Hartley-Brewer agreed, simply observing: “Amen.”

Matt Ward posted: “Just disgusting. Looks more like the day after Glastonbury than a public park!

“Locked up for months then disrespecting our environment at the first opportunity.

“You’d think there would be more respect for what we have seen as we’ve been without it for so long.”

Colin Dunckley added: “Can only assume that’s how they live at home, they have no shame, just expect someone else to clean up their mess.

“Probably thinks it’s the government’s job.”

In a separate post, BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker said: “TAKE IT WITH YOU!!!” he exclaimed in capital letters.

He added leaving litter behind was “the height of selfishness.”

The Sheffield park was far from being the only public amenity which has been impacted in recent days.

Pictures taken in Hyde Park, Leeds showed brawling youths, one bloodied and bruised man being helped away by friends, and police in attendance.

Referring to nearby Woodhouse Moor park in Leeds, one resident said: “There are hundreds here, literally hundreds.

“People have barbecues going on. It’s really frustrating, to be honest.

“I get it, it’s 20C and people want to enjoy the weather, but we’re literally a few weeks away from lockdown ending. Can they not just wait?”

In Birmingham, large crowds gathered in Cannon Hill Park earlier this week with “music and lighting being set up”.

Adam Jones, from Moseley, Birmingham, said he saw a “couple of thousand” at the park while walking with his girlfriend on Tuesday evening.

The 27-year-old said: “It has been noticeably busier since restrictions eased but yesterday was really busy.

“While there was a fair few people in small groups respecting distancing, they were overshadowed by lots of big groups, sometimes up to 20/25 people, blaring music.

“We did one lap of the park and by the time we were leaving it looked like a festival.

“How it looked this morning was disgraceful – so much rubbish that a council worker estimated it would take the whole team most of the day to clear.”

In Nottingham, the Arboretum and Lenton Recreation Ground have been closed temporarily after similar incidents, with City council leader councillor David Mellen saying: “Sadly, the actions of a thoughtless minority has spoilt that.

“We will keep the situation under review and hope to reopen parks as soon as possible.”
